Abstract

Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), also known as cellulose nanofibers, there is a concern about risks of inhalation toxicity. The cellular effects of two chemically modified CNFs and four mechanically defibrillated CNFs produced by different raw material species and manufacturing methods were investigated using rat alveolar macrophages (NR8383) and human airway epithelial cells (BEAS-2B) to study the cellular effects of CNFs. We believe that these results will be useful for predicting the human inhalation risk of CNFs and accelerate their industrial application. This study was supported by project grants from the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).
