Abstract

The amount of electrolyte bound to unit area of a graphite powder depends on the surface area of the powder and is called the affinity of the powder (Vaffinity) for the electrolyte. Vaffinity was evaluated by pulsed NMR for powders with different specific surface areas and pore distributions. However, the obtained Vaffinity cannot be explained by only physical factors such as the specific surface area and the pore size distribution. We consider chemical interactions between the electrolyte and, for example, functional groups on the powder surface regarding this problem. Using the hydrophilicity of the powder as a measurement of this chemical interaction, it was found that Vaffinity tended to be high for a powder with a large hydrophilicity. The results clearly indicate that both physical and chemical interactions must be considered in evaluating the interaction between a graphite powder and an electrolyte.
