Description

Recently, some steel open dams were damaged or collapsed by the large-scale debris flow or the potential eccentric debris flow load. To this end, it became needed to examine the load-carrying capacity of a steel open dam against large-scale debris flow. This paper presents the quantitative assessment on load-carrying capacity of steel open dams against front and eccentric debris flow loads. First, the definition of redundancy of a steel open dam is described as the redundant strength ratio before damage and the residual strength ratio after damage (loss of a member) from the structural safety. Second, the robustness of a steel open dam is defined as the strength reduction rate by the eccentric debris flow load. As the numerical examples, the strength-displacement relations of three steel open dams with different structural shapes were examined by performing an incremental elastic-plastic analysis. Finally, the redundancy and robustness of steel open dams were evaluated quantitatively.
