Abstract

According to the damage survey of rectangular water tanks in recent large earthquakes in Japan, it has been clarified that bulging type damages occurred much more than sloshing type damages. However, so far researches on the bulging behavior of rectangular water tanks have not been fully done, and in various seismic design guidelines no specific rules with respect to bulging response of rectangular water tanks have not been codified clearly. In this paper, through detailed FEM analyses of several water tank models, we investigate the fundamental characteristics of bulging vibration of rectangular water tanks, and as the result of comparing with Minowa et al.’s experimental and analytical research, we demonstrate that as their analytical approach has some limitation, generally some numerical approach such as the FEM is needed for the bulging analysis. Further in the calculation of the seismic response, instead of laborious direct FEM time-history analysis, we propose a simplified theoretical procedure utilizing the results of FEM natural vibration analysis to estimate the maximum seismic response of rectangular water tanks to some good accuracy, which results in a kind of modified seismic coefficient method. The proposed method will be practically very useful for regulations of seismic design against bulging of rectangular water tanks, with respect to which nothing has been established.
