Abstract

The competencies required of superiors working with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) individuals were examined. Behavioral event interviews were conducted in companies employing and conducting good practices with ASD people. As a result, competencies consistent with practices defined by the company as managerial competencies were identified. Also, competencies that tended to be peculiar to ASD individuals’ superiors were explored. The results indicated five competencies required of superiors: human resource development; team leadership; impact and influence; interest in orderliness; and quality, accuracy, and emphasis on support and services. Differences in human resource development and employee management methods based on the organization’s size were also examined, which indicated that ASD individuals could be accommodated without special treatment because these companies, for example, had developed good individual management and consultation systems and conducted career development programs to facilitate ASD individuals’ performance. It is recommended that future studies explore methods of refining managers’ cognitive competencies, including analytical and conceptual thinking, which might contribute to enhancing the problem-solving abilities of ASD individuals. Future studies should also examine a broader range of managerial competencies, including coworkers’duties and interpersonal relationships with ASD individuals.
