Abstract

The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between self regulation and motivation for healthy eating. Data from 349 university students (168 males, 181 females) were used for analysis. Self regulation and motivation for healthy eating were measured. The results showed that autonomous motivation positively associated with both regulation of overeating and regulation of skipping meal and/ or unbalanced diet. We also found that controlled motivation positively related to self regulation of skipping meal and/ or unbalanced diet. However, controlled motivation related to self regulation of over eating only in females. There was not a significant relationship between controlled motivati on and regulation of overeating in males. In summary, while autonomous motivation is essential for self regulation for healthy eating, controlled motivation might be different depend on gender.
