Abstract

Under Chinese publishing regulations, sexually provocative depictions, erotic texts and images are called "moral contamination," and their publication and sale are completely forbidden. These materials cannot be suppressed entirely, however, and are marketed illegally. The aim of this research is to assess the impact of mass media, with respect to differences between formal and private routes used for obtaining sexual information by junior and senior high school students, based on the actual and unique conditions pertaining in China, in contrast to Japan and the countries of the West. Further, this study anticipates new results will be obtained using new analytic techniques to focus on the main effects and interactions of the factors of grades, sex, and region. First, single factor ANOVA was conducted for all six grades, from the first year of junior through the third year of senior high school in Beijing. The results show that first year junior high students differ from those in all other grades in having the least amount of sexual information obtained through formal routes, and that in comparison with junior high school students, second and third year high school students had the greatest amount of information obtained through private routes.Next, using data for second year students, as representative of both junior and senior high school populations, ANOVA was conducted for the three factors of school, sex, and regional difference. The results show that sexual information obtained through formal routes was greater for girls, and that information obtained through private routes was greater for boys in general and especially for high school boys. As for the interactions of school and regional difference, it is clear that junior high school students in remote regions obtained more sexual information through private routes than the students in urban centers or suburban regions. Many areas of agreement are seen between the results noted above and an examination of differences based on grades, sex, and region for sexual interest, sexual behavior, and sexual attitude.
