抄録

This thesis summarizes the history and culture related of icehouses “Himuro” andsnow cellars “Yukimuro” in Japan. In the 1st period (from ancient to Edo Period),Chinese icehouse culture (ice collection / ice storage technology /utilization of the storedice) was introduced to Japan through migrants, and the upper classes in the aristocraticand samurai society only were able to use the stored ice and snow. In the 2nd period(from Meiji to early Showa period), the Western ice culture by Boston ice imported wasconveyed, and the supply and consumption of stored snow and ice was booming to masssociety too. The present age, in which the stored snow and ice is re-evaluated and triedto be used as one of the renewable energy resources, can be positioned in the 3rd period.In this 3rd period, the utilization of stored snow and ice is showing a new aspect withthe application of science and technology

この小論は、日本における氷室・雪室を用いた貯蔵雪氷利用の歴史とそれに関わる文化について整理したものである。日本における氷室の起源、古代から近代までのその歴史・文化の様子、および現代の貯蔵雪氷利用の現状を概観し考察を加えた。
