Abstract

Republic of Palau has been a dream destination for divers and snorkelers from all over the world. The country is also known for her fierce battle of Peleliu Island in WWII. In 2012, Rock Islands Southern Lagoon, Palau's pristine islands and waters have been designated as one of World Heritage Sites. Recently, tourists from Asian nations (Japan, Taiwan, Korea, China) has been increasing and various negative impacts has been observed. Thus, nation-wide tourism planning and mplementation has to be needed. This article discusses current conditions and problems of Palau's tourism and suggests directions for sustainable tourism based on interviews, focus group meetings, and, literature reviews. The major problems of the country's tourism development found in this study were the leakage of tourism revenue due to the lack of diversities in industries, sustainable tourism practice aiming for protection of nature, and establishment of nation-wide tourism master plan.
