Abstract

The early episodes of Okaasan to Issho (With Mother)—NHK’s series magazine show for young children—have many unknown details because of little footage remaining though we understand that numerous independent creators, including Iizawa Tadasu and Kawamoto Kihachiro, were engaged in the production. The author recently learned that families of deceased creators have preserved scripts and photos of original pictures used for a segment aired once a week from 1962 through 1966 called “Konna e moratta [we received these pictures]” (scripted by Tsutsui Keisuke and drawn by Seiich Horiuchi). Based on these materials, the author elucidates the early program’s direction styles, content, producing circumstances, and how independent creators were involved in the production, which have been unclear to date. Since the program evolved not only within but also beyond broadcasting, the author also examines the developments to discuss the possibilities and limitations of television in comparison with other media.
