Abstract

Currently, Japan is promoting measures for women's entry to farming, which is also being hailed by the media. The trend is set to increase. Until recently, marriage and entry to farming are one set for female farmers. However, when young single women began to choose agriculture as their profession marking their entry to farming as a business, marriage became a separate entity.
This paper analyzes how single female farmers who inherit the family business as “a farmer's daughter” and those who run farms as a business consider their career. Further, the study also analyzes the actual conditions of their personal life and their farming business and how the two aspects are related.
The findings revealed that women who consider agriculture as their profession work towards improving their career as a farm manager. They also do not consider agriculture as a family business that they need to pass on to their children. They consider it their personal occupation. The relationship between women engaged in agriculture as a profession and their family life undergoes changes.
