説明
This study investigated the effects of holding a ski pole on postural control during standing. Twenty college students( ten males and females, respectively) participated in this study. Barefooted participants performed three postural tasks with swaying as little as possible on a force platform for thirty seconds. Three postural tasks were as follows: crossing arms in front of their chest (arm-crossing task), open arms as they were skiing (open-arm task), and holding a ski pole (ski-pole task). Participants performed these postural tasks under the following three sensory conditions: eyes open (EO), eyes closed (EC), and standing on a foam pad with eyes closed( FP). During each trial, the center of pressure (COP) trajectory was recorded. Sway velocity and sway area were calculated. Repeated measure analyses of variance were executed for sway velocity and sway area. Our results reveal that the postural task by sensory condition interaction was significant for both sway velocity and sway area. In particular, sway velocity in the ski-pole task was significantly smaller than that in the arm-crossing task in the EO condition. The result suggests that, especially in the peripheral visual field, the retinal image of a ski pole functions as a visual cue stabilize standing posture, even during skiing.
