説明

The authors carried out numerical experiments using nonhydrostatic model to investigate three dimensional features of frontal subduction in the subpolar front of the Japan Sea and the effect of surface cooling on it. Ageostrophic motion due to frontogenetic process subducts surface subpolar water along isopycnal surfaces. As a result, patches of subducted subpolar water are generated within the anticyclonic eddy at lower pycnocline. These results correspond well to the hydrographic observations near the subpolar front of the Japan Sea. It is suggested that surface cooling intensifies the transport of subducted water away from the front. Possible scenario of frontal subduction in the Japan Sea is also discussed.
