Description

The long-term outcomes, complications, and safety of submucosal turbinectomy with posterior nasal neurectomy for cases with nasal hypersensitivity, including allergic rhinitis, were evaluated, and the effectiveness of this procedure and whether it can be performed as day surgery under local anesthesia were investigated. Based on the responses to a questionnaire completed by 101 individuals who had undergone this procedure between 3 and 16 years earlier, the efficacy rate was calculated as 79% for sneezing, 83% for nasal discharge, 97% for nasal obstruction, and 89% for difficulties in daily living. The effect was sustained in 75% of the respondents. The frequency of postoperative hemorrhage was low (0.6%), and no cases of bleeding were seen with the placement of oxidized cellulose with injected cyanoacrylate over the past 2 years. No serious long-term complications that interfered with everyday activities were reported. Intraoperative pain was mild, there was little intraoperative bleeding, and the operative time was short. Submucosal turbinectomy with posterior nasal neurectomy is thought to be an operative technique that can be performed as day surgery under local anesthesia.
