Abstract

Cricoid cartilage necrosis is a condition that results from insufficient blood supply to the cartilage due to destruction of the cartilage membrane mucosa, often caused by trauma or pressure to the larynx. We report a case of cricoid cartilage necrosis resulting from prolonged intubation in which hyperbaric oxygen therapy proved effective. during the treatment of COVID-19 pneumonia. The patient, a 23-year-old woman, required oral intubation for 13 days, unit with 48 hours in the prone position, who presented 23 days after extubation with wheezing, subglottic stenosis, and edema of the laryngeal mucosa. She was started on treatment with antibiotics and a steroid. During tapering of the steroid dose, her symptoms relapsed, and cervical CT revealed necrosis of the right cricoid cartilage. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy was administered, and her symptoms gradually subsided. With the increase in the number of patients intubated with COVID-19 respiratory failure, the possible complication of cricoid cartilage necrosis should be considered in patients after COVID-19 recovery.
