Abstract

This study aimed to gather post-total hip arthroplasty (THA) difficulties of older adults aged over 75 years. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine outpatients on their first visit after hospital discharge. Characteristics, life situations after discharge, and post-THA difficulties were gathered. Qualitative data were analyzed by content analysis. Results identified eight categories, including “continuing any symptoms after discharge,” “necessities of applying caring and welfare services,” and “necessities of role assignment in patients’ families.” Nurses were suggested to communicate to patients the possibility of changes in walking speed and posture caused by post-THA pain, swelling, and discomfort. Additionally, nurses should provide additional support to consider the roles of family members after discharge and advise them to apply for care services.
