Abstract

This study discusses the impact of the digital wage payment and the opening of new accounts on the female savings activities, ability to cope with economic crises, and financial literacy of female RMG workers in Bangladesh. Previous studies have indicated that the introduction of digital wage payments in RMG factories promotes savings activities by female workers. However, this study clarifies that few people save in their salary accounts. The women used their newly opened DPS accounts for savings activities, not the accounts from which their salaries were paid. Moreover, opening new accounts, such as payroll accounts and DPS accounts, expands strategic choice opportunities for female RMG workers to pursue self-interest and contribute to others in a patriarchal society.
