Description

As moral education has been strengthened in the Courses of Study, private schools have replaced the moral education course with a religion course. In such private schools with religious studies, the extent to which religious education realizes moral education has not been examined. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the relationship between religious education and moral education demanded by public education in private religious schools. After organizing the contents of the Courses of Study regarding moral education, a case study was conducted at Rakusei Junior and Senior High School, which is based on a Christian Catholic congregation. Specifically, we examined the development of moral education at Rakusei from the perspectives of religious studies, special activities, and student guidance. The lesson content of the religious studies course fulfilled all of the educational content of the moral education course, although it had not intended to do so. In special activities, it was found that the solemnity of the religious events was awe-inspiring, and furthermore, education was conducted in an attempt to instill a sense of responsibility. In student guidance, autonomy was seen to be fostered through a form of guidance that emphasized public spirit and respect for the individual, while also being grounded in Christian teachings. Based on these results, it is clear that religious education generally replaces moral education unintentionally, and that moral education through religious education contributes to the realization of moral education throughout the entire school curriculum.
