The purpose of this research was to investigate the postural stability of China-origin martial art 'Taikiken' practitioners with average skill. Three taikiken practitioners and seven university students (non-practitioners) participated as subjects. Length of sway path (LNG) for 30 seconds was measured for the individuals in each of eight types of standing position with a combination of the following possible attitudes: with eyes open or closed, standing with legs closed or slightly open, knees straight or slightly bended, with the arms running along with the body or perpendicular to it, and with both legs standing on the floor or with only one leg standing. No significant differences of LNG were found on average between the practitioners and the students in the three types of standing position in both legs and with straight knees, whether with legs closed or slightly open. Taikiken practitioners showed, however, significantly (P<0.05) smaller postural sway on average when the individuals had to stand up in one leg only or with bended knees irrespective of leg spread. This research suggests therefore that the practice of taikiken could diminish posture sway limitedly in attitudes frequently used in it.
