Abstract

The purpose of this study is to understand the value and significance of Specially selected wood material Meiboku. Meiboku is selected based on a value judgment different from that of general materials, and following the aesthetics in concordance withthe Sukiya architecture and Chashitu. In this study, Moku is reconsidered as a symbol and important criteria of Meiboku use, clarifying the difference in wood grain will lead to understanding the meaning of Meiboku. Therefore, I conducted an interview with a printing company, one of the leading suppliers of printed sheets for wall paneling, in order to investigate the decorative wall paneling sheets which is a product using wood grain print designs. I also conducted an awareness survey on wood grain and Moku for young people (218 individuals, aged 18-28) in July 2021. As a result of the survey, I concluded that the perception of material use Meiboku accompanied the change of living environment. Wood is used in modern life as a symbol of nature and as a familiar material that provides comfort and healing. However, the demand for Meiboku use, Moku and the thought that values Moku are being lost., a tendency that I believe is linked to the deterioration of modern natural environment.
