Abstract

A 9-year-old, male neutered Toy-poodle presented with white nodule measuring 1 mm x 1.4 mm in the pupillary margin at the initial clinical examination. The nodule originated from the posterior surface of the iris and was inverted toward the anterior chamber side. Since there was no response to medical treatment, surgical nodule removal was performed. The removed tissues were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and Prussian blue, and Neuron Specific Enolase (NSE), Vimentin, S100 and Iba-1 were performed as immunohistochemistry. Histopathological diagnosis of the intraocular nodule was cholesterol granuloma (CG). The epithelial-like structures around the nodule stained positive with NSE and Vimentin, indicated that CG was iridociliary epithelial cell origin. In the nodule, positive Iba-1 suggested granulomatous inflammation and positive Prussian blue suggested previous bleeding. Intraocular CG has been few reported and has not been described definite etiology and prognosis. This case report describes the histopathological findings and the consideration for etiology of intraocular CG in dogs.
