Abstract

The new national curriculum guidelines give weight to planning for more effective Information and Communications Technology (ICT) application. As part of the teachertraining course, there is a need for hands-on guidance to increase the students’ ability to use ICT. However, looking at our students of teacher-training courses, one sees that a large number of students are unskilled in the operation and practical application of ICT equipment.
In this study, we tackle the issue of reducing students’ feelings of inadequacy and increasing their confidence and motivation in using ICT equipment, and report on using the students’ own smartphones for practical instruction to “create and publish teaching presentations and mock lessons.”
Using survey results for the teaching presentations created by students and mock lessons, we show the effectiveness of instruction using smartphones as low-threshold ICT use for students.
