Description

Under the Paris Agreement adopted in 2015, the international community and many countries have shown the emission reduction targets and initiatives to realize the decarbonized society. Quantitative analysis based on models has been providing theoretical support. The climate change issue is a huge problem that involves from the national scale to the global scale, from the short term to the long term, and various academic disciplines, and it is not easy to understand and propose countermeasures. In such a situation, integrated assessment is a framework that stands between stakeholders including policy makers and various academic disciplines and it provides scientific knowledge in response to policy requests. An integrated assessment model (IAM) is a tool that quantifies the integrated assessment. In this paper, it is explained how integrated assessment models are involved in climate change issues and what kind of research results have been provided to policy makers and other stakeholders, using the Asia-Pacific Integrated Model (AIM), which was developed mainly by the National Institute for Environmental Studies, as an example, from the global and national perspectives, respectively. And then, future research prospects on IAM are discussed.
