Abstract

The purpose of this analysis of the works of John Atkinson Grimshaw, a British artist of the 19th century, is to clarify the method of his moonlight paintings so that we may make better use of his techniques for our own oil paintings of night views. This analysis distinguishes between his works of 1860’s and the one painted since the 1870’s, which have different styles. This Paper focused on works of 1860’s as the first part. I examined at gallery in England, including Leeds Art Gallery, which houses many of his works. The content is based on the examination of his works and catalogues with the following two major viewpoints. Firstly, the structure (composition, perspective, color scheme, subject of the painting); and secondly, technique (foundation, painting oil, and painting process). Grimshaw’s early paintings from the 1860s demonstrate how he established the techniques used in his moonlight paintings which increased in number after 1870. This analysis of Grimshaw’s methods shows the importance of a vanishing perspective, applying a color scheme with complementary colors, and the appropriate use of undercoats in white and transparent brown.
