- A Study on How to Teach Chinese Separable Verbs to Japanese Learners of Chinese

As a methodology for teaching Chinese to native speakers of Japanese, there is an idea of using the knowledge of the Japanese language that native speakers of Japanese have to teach Chinese grammar. In this paper, I report the results of a pilot study on separable verbs from the standpoint of this methodology. First, I roughly defined separable verbs as two-letter words with VN word structure, and then I investigated to what extent Japanese native speakers’ knowledge on the internal structure of two-letter Chinese-origin verbs in Japanese can be used to predict whether a two-letter Chinese verb is a separable verb or not. Next, I asked a native Japanese speaker who had not yet learned Chinese and is majoring in Japanese linguistics and Japanese language teaching to judge whether 291 two-letter words at the elementary level( up to the third level of the Chinese Language Proficiency Test) were separable verbs or not according to the above definition, based on his knowledge of Japanese, and examined the degree of agreement between his judgment and mine. As a result, the degree of agreement (coverage rate) was about 90%, indicating that it is possible to judge whether a word is a separable verb or not based on knowledge of the native Japanese language. Based on the above results, I proposed a new teaching method for teaching separable verbs, such as introducing separable verbs from the beginner level using learners’ knowledge of Japanese, or their mother tongue.
