Chinese teachers played an essential role in the Chinese learning of protestant missionaries who came to China. This paper discusses the importance of Chinese teachers in the Chinese study of missionaries according to the historical materials from the English periodical The Chinese Recorder. It is mainly reflected in three aspects: firstly, Chinese teachers played a great role in "curriculum learning"; secondly, they assisted missionaries in translating the Bible; thirdly, they help missionaries in compiling Chinese textbooks. This paper focuses on the views of Alvin Pierson Parker and O. F. Wisner to discuss the requirements of missionaries for Chinese teachers. These requirements include professionalism, good personal qualities of teachers, and regular replacement of teachers. Taking North China Union Language School and Nanking Language School as examples, this paper also discusses the training of Chinese teachers in Chinese language teaching institutions in China. This training emphasized the importance of "practice" for teachers.
