Description
What makes the stagnation of the Japanese economy persistent so long? How have so many people been moving into the Tokyo metropolitan area from around the country? I have studied these problems for years from a viewpoint of de-industrialization and shift to a service economy, which rapidly progressed in Japan in the 1990s. I put together the results of this research. The de-industrialization and shift to a service economy in Japan has slowed down the country’s formation of physical capital and reduced employee income, while the hollowing-out of industries has caused many regions to lose a huge number of employees in non-basic sectors such as retail sales and personal services as well. It has also weakened the interregional linkages in the Japanese economy, which decreases the demand for goods and services made in peripheral regions with most of the demand from the Tokyo metropolitan area heading towards itself. As a result, the Japanese economy remains stagnant, and the Tokyo metropolitan area keeps growing in contrast to the rest of the country.
