Abstract
The Yaqui are a cross-border indigenous group residing near the Mexico – United States border. Despite the fragmentation of their people and ethnic space because of the establishment of the international border and construction of the modern nation-state, this group has maintained ethnic consciousness. Since the 1990s, it has increased exchanges beyond the international border. Transnational exchange that has been achieved in the cultural sphere has developed into system of transnational gift exchange. The network, which was originally developed in ritual space, has transformed into a multiple network extending beyond the border. However, the transnational gift-exchange involving individuals and groups of different social and cultural backgrounds, such as nationality and community origin, has created discrepancies among different parties. This article presents an examination of the state of transnationalization of the Yaqui through classification and analyses of the four types of transnational exchange, ritual gift exchange, cultural gift exchange, exchange of cultural items and gift.
