Description
This is a report on the development of a support program for self-directed English learning started in 2022 aimed at undergraduate students after accredited compulsory language courses. It was planned as a 6 month non-credit based course. The course consisted of intensive lectures followed by a monitoring period for students’ self-directed learning. The lectures addressed various aspects of English learning, revisions of the English learning aims, and learning strategies. Students were required to attend all lectures and submit goal-setting forms monthly during the half-year course. The results of the initial survey were then presented. It was illustrated that after accredited compulsory language courses, students tend to have a lack of motivation to continue their English learning. Their English test scores indicated that some students had already achieved a high level equivalent to the C1 level of CEFR but wished to acquire new learning strategies. A certain number of students withdrew from the course as the course was non-credit based. In a sense, those who remained until the end should be the targets of serious support.
