An introduction to the study of Yixueqimeng 易学啓蒙 : with a focus on the method of using bamboo divination

Abstract

Yixueqimeng 易学啓蒙 was completed in March 1186, 10 years after Zhuxi 朱熹 wrote Zhouyibenyi 周易本義. Zhuxi 朱熹 has been revising the book for more than a decade even after it was printed, and his academic enthusiasm for the book was special. Zhuxi 朱熹 describes the purpose of his writing in his preface and states that it is to present a solid theoretical basis for beginners. However, even though it is a “book of enlightenment for beginners,” the content of Yixueqimeng 易学啓蒙 is by no means simple. In the first place, the name qimeng 啓蒙 was modestly named with modesty, but he thought it was rather insolent, so he told his teacher friend Caiyuanding 蔡元定 that he wanted to change it to a different name. Yixueqimeng 易学啓蒙 consists of four chapters: Bentushu 本図書 chapter 1, Yuanguahua 原卦画 chapter 2, Mingshice 明蓍策 chapter 3, and Kaobienzhan 考変占 chapter 4. At first, He was thinking of a composition of Yuanguahua 原卦画 chapter 2 and Mingshish 明蓍策 chapter 3, but based on the theory of six, seven, eight, nine derived from Hetuluoshu 河図 洛書, Bentushu 本図書 chapter 1 was added, and Kaobienzhan 考変占 chapter 4 was a separate edition of the Guabientu 卦変図 contained in Mingshish 明蓍策 chapter 3. In this article, Mingshish 明蓍策 chapter 3 that is an explanation of the method of using bamboo divination sticks in Dayanzhishu 大衍之数 chapter of Xicizhuan 繫辞伝 is considered. The method of using bamboo divination, which is widely known today, but is a complex and intractable problem in the study of the history of interpretation and thought of it. It’s not just only Mingshice 明蓍策 chapter 3. The fact that there is little research on Yixueqimeng 易学啓蒙 today illustrates the difficulty of the book. In this article, I examined the number theory of the points contained in the Yixueqimeng 易学啓蒙 and explored Zhuxi 朱熹’s interpretation and characteristics of method.
