Description
The aim of this paper is to investigate the non-causative interpretation of saseru-sentences in Japanese. Saseru-sentences exhibit two interpretations, that is to say a causative interpretation and a non-causative interpretation. I show that such an interpretational alternation can be observed not only in saseru-sentences but also in “ordinary” transitive/intransitive sentences. Furthermore, assuming two types of CONTROL, i.e., a “Weak” CONTROL and a “Strong” CONTROL, I argue that the non-causative interpretation of saseru-sentences depends on “Weak” CONTROL. The analysis presented in this paper leads to the conclusion that every kind of verb can be embedded in saseru-sentences.
