Abstract

The number of patients undergoing long-term follow up after surgery for upper gastrointestinal disease is increasing, and we frequently conduct endoscopic examinations for such patients in our daily clinical practice. Early detection and appropriate diagnosis of postoperative gastric cancer are therefore urgently required. The characteristics of early gastric cancer in postoperative stomachs are different depending on previous surgery. In terms of treatment, surgery is considered to be highly invasive due to the effects of adhesions caused by previous surgeries. Although minimally invasive treatments such as ESD are desirable, ESD may sometimes prove difficult due to suture lines and anastomosis. In this study, we mainly review the characteristics of early gastric cancer that develop in remnant stomachs or gastric tubes after surgery, as well as tips for treatment.
