Description

In this paper, I tried to make clear Japanese Landscape's Modernism and Nationalism in Taisho and early Showa. The question of european modern design's adoptions also cropped up in Taisho and early Showa period critiques of the conventional Japanese style house-garden, and in statements of the Housing Improvment (Jutaku Kaizen Undo). However by the late Taisho period, a few example of middle class residences with modern design style garden appeared in a model house shown at an exhibition by the Life Improvement Union (Seikatsu Kaizen Domeikai) and among other designs presented in magazines. In the european style homes with modern garden the living room had a focal position, both in terms of family life, and on the architectural ground plan. This study's objects are Dr. T. Tamura's early books and his activity in the Life Improvement Union. In conclusion, Dr. Tamura's texts and actions in the history of Japanese modern Landscape and Architecture includes european modern design's thought as secession.
