抄録

The present paper describes an attempt to identify the basic rules of paragraph writing. Through the analysis of the exisiting literature including journal articles and reference books on paragraph writing published in Japanese or English, we were able to distill 10 basic rules of paragraph writing for which there is a certain amount of agreement recognized among the literature we analyzed. These basic rules can be classied into the followig 4 categories:" core rules,""rules concerning the topic sentence,""rules concerning supporting sentences,""auxiliary rules."While there are always exceptions to any rules, these agreed-upon 10 rules should constitte the fundamentals for any learner who wants to learn paragprah writing and lay the foundations for future research and application. Some applied and advanced aspects of pagraph writing such as patters of paragprahs (temporal, spatial, chronological, etc.) or how to construct effective sentences were inevitably omitted for the purpose of the present analysis, they are nonethelss very important when we write paragraphs in the real context. Also, most of the literatured that we analyzed in this research is originally written for the native speakers of Japanese or English, but we believe that the 10 rules for teaching Japanese paragraph writing can be usefully taught to international students who learn Japanese as a foreign language. Furthre research is needed on what to teach regarding pagraph writing besides the 10 basic rules, how to sequence these rules and the other elements of paragraph writing in a particular course or program, and how learners learn pagraph writing in the classroom.
