Abstract
The National Tuberculosis Sanatorium, founded in 1945, is one of the national medical institutes mainly consisting of tuberculosis beds. It accepted patients of tuberculosis rampant in Japan in the war aftermath. While the number of beds rose along with the increase in the number of patients, it dropped several years after the decline in the number of tuberculosis patients in the 1950s. Since then, the National Tuberculosis Sanatorium reduced the number of tuberculosis beds by converting them to other uses. In such historical transition, this paper focuses on the 1940s in which the sanatorium was established and the radical increase in the number of beds was observed to examine the situations surrounding the establishment of the tuberculosis beds in the sanatorium and the increase in the number of beds in the following years.
