Abstract

OBJECTIVES: We conducted an analysis to evaluate the relationship between prevalent vertebral fractures (pr-VF) and presence of abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) in patients visiting our hospital.

METHODS: Presence/absence of AAC and pr-VF was confirmed on lateral lumbar spine radiographs of patients who visited or were admitted to our hospital. In addition, the demographic data of these patients were also extracted from the medical records. We conducted linear regression analyses using each demographic factor and pr-VF as independent variables and the presence of AAC as a dependent variable to evaluate the relationship between pr-VF and presence of AAC.

RESULTS: We reviewed the records of a total of 931 patients. Factors that were significantly associated with pr-VF were female gender, advanced age, low bone mineral density (BMD) in the lumbar spine, presence of AAC, and cognitive decline. On the other hand, factors that were significantly associated with the presence of AAC were advanced age, low BMD in the femoral neck, presence of pr-VF, concomitant chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and habitual use of hypnotic drugs.

DISCUSSION: Our findings suggested the existence of a close correlation between the presence of AAC and pr-VF. Among the factors examined, advanced age was correlated with both the presence of AAC and pr-VF.

CONCLUSIONS: AAC and pr-VF may share some common predisposing factors.
