Abstract

An 87-year-old male injured his left leg on the dorsal fin of a sea bream while fishing. He was prescribed antibiotics by his physician but was referred to our hospital due to worsening local findings and admitted on the same day. Within 48 hours of the injury, he showed impaired consciousness, decreased blood pressure, and worsening respiratory status. As necrotizing soft tissue infection was strongly suspected, he underwent amputation of the left thigh. The postoperative course was good and the patient was discharged 26 days after admission. Although Vibrio vulnificus is a well-known cause of necrotizing soft-tissue infections after marine injuries, the pathogen Photobacterium damselae was detected in the wound culture in the present case. Herein, we report a rare case of necrotizing soft tissue infection caused by Photobacterium damselae.
