Abstract

The Pauline epistles contain several occurrences of the distinctive conception "image (εἰκών) of Jesus Christ," which is rarely found in New Testament other than the Pauline epistles ( Rom 8:29 ; 1Cor 15:49 ; 2Cor 3:18 ; cf. Phil 3:21). Often cited as background for the LXX of this term are God's declarations in Gen 1:26 and the description of God's creative acts in Gen 1:27. However, despite the commonality of the term (εἰκών) and the similar ideas that are discussed using this term, previous studies have not been conclusive in determining that the Pauline letters actually address Gen 1:26-27. By focusing on the Christological importance of κύριος in the Pauline epistles, which has not received much attention in the past, this study argues that the exegetical influence of Gen 1:26-27 exists in the background of the "image of Jesus Christ" spoken of in Paul's eschatology, which is distinctive even in the context of Second Temple Judaism and ancient Christianity.
