Abstract

The effect of sand back pass on the Shimizu coast was numerically investigated. 2.5×105 m3 of sand is assumed to be excavated around the tip of the Mihono-Matsubara sand spit and such material is transported upcoast for beach nourishment, while reducing the loss of sand via a steep slope of the sand spit. First, topographic changes of the sand spit between September 2010 and November 2021 were reproduced using the BG model to investigate the applicability of the model to this coast. Then, the effect of sand back pass was investigated by this model. It was found that it is fundamentally difficult to stop the falling sand via a steep slope around the tip of the sand spit, and the effect of large-scale excavation for the procurement of nourishment sand only continues until the time when the excavated hole is fully buried by longshore sand transport.
