Abstract

Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-serving British monarch overseeing the seventy years of post-war transformation and change. This paper looks back her reign and deals with topics such as the British constitutional monarchy, the royal finance based on the Crown Estate and the two Duchies, as well as little-known episodes with the Japanese Imperial family over the Order of the Garter. The paper then goes on to its main topic, Elizabeth II and her relationship with Scotland. The large parts of the Scottish nation have been seeking their separation from the United Kingdom to become an independent nation state ever since the 1970s. This paper examines the nature and characteristics of Scottish nationalism and considers various factors that have facilitated their nationalist sentiments, such as the discovery and development of the North Sea Oil in the 1970s, the 1980s of the Thatcher Government, the establishment of the Scottish Government and Parliament in the 1990s, the independence referendum of 2014, and the Brexit of the 2020s. The paper concludes by putting the death of Elizabeth II at Balmoral in 2022 in the context of the issues of Scottish nationalism and future independence.
