Abstract

It is known that roughening of wood surfaces increases the coating weight of wood preservative semi-transparent coatings and improves the weatherability performance of coated wood. Therefore, we applied sandblasting wood surfaces using alumina abrasive and investigated its effects on the surface texture and the weatherability of the coated wood. The processing speed of the surface preparation and the effects of the preparation on the weatherability were compared with those of incision using short-pulse UV laser. The sandblasting straight-grained surfaces of cedar heartwood mainly ground earlywood, and roughened the surfaces more significantly with larger particle size of the abrasive. The coating weight was positively correlated with the arithmetic mean height, Sa, of the roughened earlywood. Accelerated weathering tests showed that the weatherability of the coated wood was influenced by the coating weight, and that the water repellency index of over 95% could be maintained for about four times as long as that of untreated wood when #24 particle size abrasive was used. The results also indicated that sandblasting may be superior to UV laser incision in terms of treatment time to achieve the same level of weatherability. These results indicate that the sandblasting is effective in improving the weatherability of coated wood.
