Abstract

Based on future population projections, it is predicted that in 2065 approximately 1 in 2.6 Japanese will be 65 or older and 1 in 3.9 will be 75 or older, indicating a rapid aging of Japan's population. In light of these projections, health care issues for the elderly are expected to become increasingly important. Among welfare activities for the elderly that promote recovery of motor function, mental health, and communication skills, it has been found that toy medicine using toys, known as activity toys, is actually being practiced. Therefore, we analyzed how to play with toys and what kind of tasks are effective for the rehabilitation of the elderly. The method involved extracting typical activity toys and evaluating them by rough set decision rule analysis. As the aging rate continues to increase, demand is expected to increase, and the variety of toys needs to be enhanced. Thus, we analyzed activity toys and discussed guidelines for the development of new therapeutic toys as well as the selection of existing products.
