Description
Peer support is defined as the student support provided by peer students. The Office for Students with Disabilities at Iwate University has been utilizing peer support for the increasing number of students who have developmental and / or mental disorders in order to develop a sense of belonging and improve learning. The purpose of this study is to report the interim progress and examine its significance and points to keep in mind. To create a sense of belonging, graduate students majoring in clinical psychology were placed as peer supporters in the area, where students with disabilities could use to take a break and study, to facilitating interactions among the students. As for learning support, tutors provided individual assistance for the students with disabilities studying subjects that they tend to have trouble with. Both types of peer support have been helpful to the students with disabilities, which suggests that they also have educational significance for the students providing support, yet it is necessary to measure the effect by quantitative methods in the future. In addition, it became clear that supporting students need certain expertise and aptitude. Therefore, the staff in charge must pay attention to the procedure for selecting those students and suitably matching them with students with disabilities.
