Abstract

A woman in her 50s was rushed to the hospital with a chief complaint of abnormal behavior. There is no past medical history. Her physical examination revealed only tenderness over her abdomen. Blood gas revealed she had hyperglycemia and metabolic acidosis. Additional testing after her emergency admission confirmed that she had fulminant type 1 diabetes. Her consciousness improved rapidly with fluid replacement and insulin therapy. Patients with fulminant type 1 diabetes who have no history of diabetes come to the hospital with various symptoms due to hyperglycemia, so caution is required. Prompt blood glucose measurement is essential.
