Abstract

In snowy cold regions, visibility hindrance due to snowstorms is one of the causes of traffic problems in winter. In this study, we analyzed the observation data obtained using X-band MP radar to estimate the visibility during a snowstorm over a wide area and in real time. We first estimated the horizontal distribution of snowstorm intensity (mass flux of blowing snow) in the sky based on the snowfall intensity and wind speed obtained from the radar data. Next, in consideration of the advection caused by wind until falling snow particles have reached the ground, we estimated the distribution of mass flux of blowing snow near the ground. Visibility calculated from the mass flux of blowing snow roughly matched the values measured using a visibility meter.
