Abstract

In this study, we examined the intricate relationship between empathy and risk avoidance behavior within the context of four traffic situations, characterized by the presence or absence of a traffic light (rule-based scenario) and the child’s presence with a friend or as solo (interpersonal scenario). The study sample comprises 75 senior kindergarten children. To measure risk-avoidance behavior, we presented stories depicting traffic scenarios, accompanied by corresponding illustrations encapsulating the narrative content. For assessing empathy, we employed a task developed by Ishikawa & Uchiyama (2001), which was based on Feshbach & Roe's (1968) AST. The analysis indicated that kindergarteners with higher empathy levels were more capable of risk-avoidance behavior than those with lower empathy, especially in interpersonal scenarios devoid of signals. These findings underscore the proposition that empathy, by endowing individuals with the ability to understand the feelings and intentions of others, may facilitate risk-avoidance behavior.
