Abstract

Literacy education increasingly requires a pluralistic and cyclical approach that encompasses existing frameworks such as “information,” “digital,” “news,” and “media.” For example, the newspaper industry has introduced NIE “Newspaper in Education”, a program in which newspapers are utilized in classrooms, and the Japan Newspaper Museum has collaborated with schools and school libraries to provide literacy education. The ultimate goal for the media is to create a common space of dialogue in society and bring literate participants to democracy at a time when society is divided by social networking services and “Selective News Avoidance” is rampant. Recognizing that literacy education has not adequately been implemented in Japan, now is the time for all concerned parties to cooperate.
