Abstract
With the development of language models and the promotion of bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policies due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), it has become increasingly challenging to measure students’ language proficiency outside of the testing environment. However, replacing a final report assignment with a mid-term exam, for example, requires assessing many answer sheets during the semester. Electronic text data on the answer sheets are necessary to automate simple spelling and grammatical error detection in this grading process. This paper reports on the attempt to develop a JavaScript-based system for conducting closed-book examinations using a BYOD environment, taking advantage of language-processing technology developments.
