Abstract

What does it mean for Yukio Mishimaʼs The Sea of Fertility (『豊饒の海』) tetralogy to be read today? More than 50 years have already passed since the release of this work, and there have been numerous stage and screen adaptations of the first volume, Spring Snow (『春の雪』). Previous studies have often discussed these adaptations from the perspective of how they changed from the original. However, from the point of view of reception theory, it is hard to ignore the influence of adaptation on the original. Therefore, this article compares the original work with adaptations such as Yukisada Isao's film Spring Snow. It also investigates the influence of Yukisada's previous work Crying Out Love, In the Center of the World (『世界の中心で、愛をさけぶ』). In addition, reference will be made to the Takarazuka Revue's musical Spring Snow and the manga Spring Snow. From the above discussion, we confirm how The Sea of Fertility acquires a new intertextuality.
