Abstract

In this study, we focus on reading and writing instruction for children who are learning Japanese as a second language in elementary school. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with teachers about the Japanese teaching methods, and teachers were also asked to evaluate the children's Japanese language acquisition progress. The results revealed that it is difficult to teach children who have trouble reading and writing in initial Japanese language instruction. We also found that listening instruction has been lacking. The development of literacy is said to be strongly related to phonological awareness. It was suggested that the readiness for learning to read and write is insufficient, especially for children in lower grades.
